For those who have never met Mickey and his side-kick Winne, they are two lovable Boston Terriers owned by author and historian Anne Nock of Onancock Virginia.  Even Anne admits it is hard at times to keep up with their schedules.  Mickey is always volunteering for such things as Relay for Life, always participating in worth while causes, yet never forgetting how important it is to live for today as tomorrow becomes the past. You see, Mickey had a close call with cancer a while back.  It seemed to increase his urge to help others less fortunate than himself.....  Here is an exert from a VTE newsletter dated August, 2001.  From this you'll understand Mickey and what he stands for.   As follows:

It's a blow when you hear your veterinarian say, "Mickey, it's cancer."  It knocked the wind out of my sails.  But lucky for me, Dr. Paula Cameron scheduled surgery the very next day after the pathology report came in.  At least I didn't have to wait a long time for surgery. We're almost sure she was able to remove the whole thing, but the  procedure set me back for several weeks.  A five-inch incision is not to be sneezed at when you weigh only 12½ lbs.  Before that, I was sympathetic to any person or dog who had cancer, but I didn't feel fighting mad to do something about.   However, Dr. Cameron's words hit me in a way that made me resolve to help stop the cancer monster's rampage.

My big chance came this week when I was asked to be on the Eastern Shore Relay For Life 2001 team. I jumped at the opportunity.  Maybe I could enlist dog friends and dog-lover friends.........

And who would Mickey insist you visit while in Onancock, none other than Willie Crockett at his Studio and Gallery on Market Street.  Willie was born and raised on Tangier Island Virginia. He is Tangierman whose paintings are recognized as some of the most honest portrayals of the Chesapeake Bay’s drama & beauty…………. You can reach Willie direct through the Chesapeake Bay Sampler, just email him at:  Willie@ChesapeakeBaySampler.com
